Decision on Sand
The sand along the Dutch provides our country with natural protection. The amount of sand present is maintained using beach nourishment.
The starting point of the Decision on Sand is to maintain the sand balance along the coast and to ensure that the coastal base remains in line with the rise in sea level. If necessary, the scope of the beach nourishment will be increased. It is desirable that beach nourishment not only contributes to maintaining the coastline (primary objective) but also, in as far as possible, to local and regional objectives in terms of an economically strong and attractive coast.
More knowledge is required in order to apply beach nourishment more efficiently and more cost effectively. For this reason, “learning while working” is an important component of the Decision on Sand: carrying out pilots, monitoring and research and using the results for new decisions.
